Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Winnipeg Youth Wind Ensemble (WYWE)?

The instruments that make up WYWE include flute/piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, string bass, and percussion. WYWE is a dedicated group of young musicians who value ensemble music making at a high standard.

Why should I join WYWE?

WYWE is for musicians who want to raise their standard of performance on their instrument and as an ensemble musician. It is an opportunity to rehearse and perform in an honour band-like environment, receive high-level instruction from instructors in sectionals and rehearsals, and develop relationships with like-minded musicians throughout the academic year.

Who can participate in WYWE?

Musicians should have at least one year of experience on their instrument and be in good standing in their school band program or in their private lesson studio. Students are generally in grades 7-10, though exceptions can be made with the artistic director's approval.

What kind of commitment does WYWE require of its musicians?

Musicians are responsible for learning their music prior to rehearsals, which requires individual practice and listening outside of rehearsal time. Rehearsals are two hours per week, and concerts will involve at least a 30 minute dress rehearsal plus the length of the concert. Musicians should plan to arrive in the rehearsal room at least 10 minutes prior to the start time to allow for room and instrument set up and a brief warm up. Musicians are expected to be in their chairs ready to start exactly on time at all rehearsals and performances.

Musicians are expected to abide by the WYWE Code of Conduct when participating in all WYWE events.

Is there a time commitment for families of WYWE musicians?

Family members are not required to attend WYWE rehearsals, but may be asked to volunteer for various tasks at performances or other WYWE events. Supporting your WYWE musician includes arranging transportation to and from rehearsals and performances on time and with all materials, and assisting with development and maintenance of practice routines at home.

When and where are WYWE rehearsals?

WYWE rehearsals are on Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 PM at the University of Manitoba (Tache Arts Complex, room T2-145) between mid-September and the end of April. All rehearsal and concert dates and locations can be found on the website.

What are the costs of being part of WYWE?

The registration fee to participate in WYWE is $200 for the 2025-2026 season. This fee covers the costs of music, rehearsal and concert venues, clinician fees and the director’s fee. The fee can be paid by cheque (payable to Winnipeg Wind Ensemble, cash, or e-transfer. The registration fee may also be paid by installment. Contact WYWE by email for more information.
